Learn about CNG.

Understand what Compressed Natural Gas is, how it works and why it matters in Tanzania.

The basics

What is CNG?

Compressed Natural Gas is natural gas compressed to a much smaller volume for storage and distribution. It is stored in high-pressure containers and used as a vehicle fuel.

Lower running cost

Typically positioned as a lower-cost alternative to petrol or diesel.

Cleaner fuel

Can reduce emissions and pollutants compared with conventional fuels.

Domestic resource

Supports use of Tanzania's natural gas resources.

How CNG works

Four simple stages.

  1. Natural gas is extracted from Tanzania's gas fields.
  2. Gas is compressed to high pressure for storage.
  3. Stored gas is transported in cascades and tube trailers.
  4. Vehicles refuel at mother and daughter stations.
